Battle of Shallowford / Van Wert Civic Theatre / 8 PM

The show is set in 1938 at Burton Mock's general store. Burton's teenage daughter, Ruthie, is trying to convince him she can handle life outside the rural town of Shallowford, but her father would like her to stay close. As the night progresses, a host of colorful locals arrive at the store. These folks are only interested in local gossip until they turn on the radio and learn that the Martians have invaded! It is the night of Orson Wells' War of the Worlds radio drama. They fall, hook, line, and sinker for the broadcast and run out to do battle.  For more information visit their web site at www.vwct.org or to reserve tickets call 419-238-9689.

Heistand Haunted Woods / Heistand Woods Park / 8 PM - 12 AM

'Tis the season for vampires to lurk while witches take flight on brooms and little goblins seek treats in the night.  Those who look forward to annual haunts will have the usual attractions to patronize this year, including a D.A.R.E. program fundraiser.  Along with the Van Wert Jaycees, the sheriff's office will once again turn the woods near the Van Wert County Hospital into a place of terror.  This year's event threatens to be even more dreadful than in the past.  Attractions include a haunted bridge, a spider-infested area, and more frightful attractions.  Open every Friday and Saturday night in October, the cost is $7 per person and funds raised go toward motivational speakers' presentations at county schools.  For more information you can visit www.warehouseofterror.com

Gabrielle Louise in Concert /  Willow Bend Country Club / 8 PM

Gabrielle Louise dives deep into her songs, exploring them in a warm, sturdy voice reminiscent at times of Joni Mitchell. She executes a captivating balance of heartache and resolve. Gabrielle Louise is a deceiving package. Though young and beautiful, the guitar-playing singer/songwriter sounds like an older woman. Her pop/country blend is distinctly adult-contemporary in flavor and boasts mature lyrics. Lovers of folk music will appreciate Louise's strong voice, which she uses with equal success on stunning high notes and rumbling lows."   Visionary Promotions is excited to be able to bring a young star of this energy and passion to Van Wert. Gabrielle Louise is one of those artists that you will talk about for years after seeing her perform."  For more information, visit www.visionarypromotions.org

The Butler Did It / Off Stage Productions / Van Wert Senior Center / 6:30 PM                          The scene is the set where Anthony J. Lefcourt, writer and director, is rehearsing his new play, a "classic whodunit" (in which all the characters are named Butler) with which he hopes to regain the success which has eluded him in recent seasons. Desperately eager to stimulate his cast to their best efforts, he has deliberately withheld the final scene of the play from them, but his patience is worn thin by the petty jealousies and romantic rivalries which detract from their concentration. In an effort to spur them on he "stages" the murder of one of the actresses, after which the plot begins to twist and turn with such dazzling ingenuity--and hilarity--that soon actors and audience alike have lost track of what is real and what is make-believe--until a surprise ending sets matters straight in a most bizarre and ironic way.  This is a dinner theatre production with a buffet served at 6:30 followed by the play.  For more information called 419-605-6708.

Harry Potter Meets the Orchestra / Niswonger Performing Arts Center / 7:30 PM

Now - we’ll bring those two great elements BACK together - the music and the magic - in Harry Potter Meets the Symphony. Merwin Siu (Potter-fan extrordinare!) will host, in costume, as your Harry Potter du jour and will guide you through owls, wands, wizards, and ogres! Be a part of the hat sorting ceremony...and see which ‘House’ of the orchestra YOU belong to! Watch Merwin mesmerize someone...and just see what he makes them do! Laugh along with everyone as our conductor attempts to lead the full orchestra...without the right ‘wand’ (baton). Come as your favorite Potter or Halloween character and join us for a costume parade across the stage. Along the way, you’ll get to hear the amazing John Williams music from the films and some other magic-themed works for orchestra. It’s the best family costume orchestra concert since Star Wars!   For more information visit their web site at www.nacvw.org or call the box office at 419-238-6722.
